Sometimes, learning begins in a classroom. Sometimes, it begins with a journey.
On September 24th, 2026, the Department of English Language Teaching (DELT), University of Kelaniya, took learning beyond the walls of the university through Wisdom Waves 4.0, a three-phased educational project to the Eastern province, Trincomalee. Bringing together university students, lecturers, school students, and teachers, the project created a space where English learning met new experiences, meaningful connections, and the simple joy of discovering something new.
Phase 1 began at T/T/Al-Minhaj Muslim Maha Vidyalayam, where TESL undergraduates and lecturers conducted interactive English teaching sessions for students from Grades 1 to 10. Rather than simply bringing lessons into the classroom, the sessions aimed to make learning engaging, enjoyable, and memorable. Through activities and interaction, the undergraduates had the opportunity to share their knowledge while creating a space where school students could participate, communicate, and learn with confidence. Further supporting the project's aim, Ms. Gevani Prahalathan, The Head of the Department donated books, encouraging reading and learning among young students.
Phase 2 was conducted by a team of six undergraduates and three lecturers; a seminar for Ordinary Level students at Sri Sumedhankara Maha Vidyalaya. The programme included an inauguration ceremony and a book donation, extending the project's reach to another school community.
The project also recognised that supporting English education means supporting those who facilitate it. In parallel with the school programmes, lecturers conducted a training session for English teachers at the Professional Development Center for Teachers in Trincomalee (Phase 3), creating an opportunity for professional learning and exchange beyond the classroom. Together, these activities reflected the broader spirit of the project.
Wisdom Waves 4.0 may have come to an end, but the ripples it created do not have to. For every student who found a new reason to read, speak, participate, or simply smile, another wave has already begun.
