The Department of English Language Teaching at the University of Kelaniya celebrated Thai Pongal on 14th January 2026, marking the traditional harvest festival that signifies gratitude, prosperity, and new beginnings. The event was organised by the first-year TESL undergraduates, with active and enthusiastic participation from all four batches.
The academic staff and students of the department arrived dressed in traditional attire and collectively engaged in the preparation of Pongal rice, following customary cultural rituals that reflect thankfulness for nature’s abundance. The department premise was adorned with kolam designs, clay pots, flowers, and traditional decorations, transforming the space into a vibrant cultural setting. The festive and lively atmosphere highlighted the department’s appreciation of cultural diversity and strengthened the sense of unity among students and staff.
