The Department of English Language Teaching, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, successfully conducted a Bibliotherapy Session for TESLiers on the 27th February 2026, offering students a meaningful opportunity to explore the healing and transformative power of reading.
The session was conducted by Dr. K.R.N. Harshani, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Library and Information Science and Director of the Kalana Mithuru Sewana. Dr. Harshani shared valuable insights into bibliotherapy as a therapeutic approach that uses reading as a tool to support emotional growth, self-reflection, and personal development. Her engaging and thought-provoking session encouraged students to view reading not merely as an academic requirement but as a pathway to self-understanding and emotional well-being.
The programme highlighted the importance of literature in fostering empathy, resilience, and mental wellness among undergraduates. Through interactive discussions and practical examples, participants gained a deeper understanding of how carefully selected texts can positively influence thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Mahishi Ranaweera, whose dedication and commitment ensured the smooth and successful conduct of the session, leaving participants inspired to integrate reading practices into their personal and academic lives as a means of holistic development.
